What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a drug-free holistic whole body approach to healing. Osteopathy was founded in the late 1800s by physician, surgeon and Osteopath Andrew Taylor Still in Kirksville, Missouri. Osteopathy views the body as a whole, not as segments or individual parts. Osteopathy is a manual form of therapy that recognizes the relationship between structure and function of the human body to achieve overall homeostasis and well-being. The Osteopathic approach is that the body has the ability to self-heal and self-regulate, and your Osteopathic Manual Practitioner helps to guide your body to heal using non-invasive manual therapy. It takes the best approaches from various other modalities to provide a full body healing approach utilizing muscle energy techniques, soft tissue techniques, stretching and strengthening exercises, as well as breathing, joint mobilizations and many others

What does Osteopathy treat?
Osteopathy truly excels at treating chronic pain. Often, people only seek out, or hear about Osteopathy, as a last resort to their pain. It’s only after their treatments they realize they should have looked at Osteopathy first! Osteopathy is great at treating a long list of issues including:

What should you expect on your first appointment?
The initial consultation is to find out about you, Osteopathy is a patient-centered form of health care and this first appointment your Manual Osteopath will go through a comprehensive health history and questionnaire to help find the root cause or contributing factors to your pain or area of concern.

Next, you will go through a comprehensive hands-on examination which will include a series of tests and assessments including joint range-of-motions, manual muscle testing and movement mechanics, among others, to help assess your posture and mobility.

Once the initial examination and tests are complete, the treatment may include several Osteopathic Manual Techniques, which can include muscle energy, joint mobilization, soft tissue, strain-counterstrain, visceral or craniosacral techniques, and others, it all depends on what you need. What should I wear?

Something comfortable that you can move in. Athletic, or workout gear is best, as your treatment is hands on, done over the clothing for the most part, however, some areas/techniques (Myofascial release, soft tissue) may be done directly on the skin. Try to avoid wearing jeans and be prepared to remove your shoes, belt and jewelry.

So is Osteopathy only for pain?

No! It's true Osteopathy is amazing for chronic pain, however, as it’s a holistic, whole-body approach to health care, it also uses manual techniques to balance all the systems of the body to provide overall good health and wellbeing, treatments can improve sleep cycles and the nervous, circulatory, and lymphatic symptoms. For those times you just feel something is "Off" Osteopathy can be a great way to realign and reset yourself. Book now
